Islam is oppressive against women and
minorities
Next misconception is “Islam is oppressive against women and minorities”.
This misconception occurs because of the urges of Islam towards Muslim women to wear
the veil and forced to stay home.
Islam does not oppress women. One of the hadith of the prophet Muhammad mentioned:
"The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his
wife."
This clearly shows how islam views women, which is clearly not oppressive.
Before the emergence of islam, which is in the era of Jahilliyah, Women are
treated as property. One of the important event that show’s how women were treated
before the emergence of Islam is that the Jahilliyah bury their daughter alive, because
of they feel that the daughter would bring shame in family name. This clearly shows
that the emergence of Islam have affected the status of women of that era, hence would
deny the misconception regarding islam being oppressive towards women. Another stated
in the hadith,
“A man came to the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and said, “O Messenger of God! Who
among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship?” The Prophet s.a.w said:
“Your mother”. The man said, “Then who?” The Prophet said: “Then your mother”.
The man further asked, “Then who?” The Prophet said: “Then your mother.” The man
asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet said: “Then your father.”
Islam also does not oppress the minorities. Based on the root meaning of Islam
itself, Salam, which means peace, shows that Islam is a religion of peace. Allah mentioned
in the Quran, in surah an nisa’ verse 36:
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives,
orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your
side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those
who are self-deluding and boastful.”
This verse clearly shows that Islam protects the minorities.
