(2) Islam is obscurantist, primitive and
uncivilized
The second western misconceptions concerning Islam are
“Islam is obscurantist, primitive and uncivilized”. The western believed that
Islam prohibits Muslims to understand something by being obscurant and Islam is
being old-fashioned and in the state of non- developing. The westerners
believed that Islamic teaching restricts the Muslims to learn things outside
the religion hence staying in the state of not following the current era. This
misconception may occur due to the believed that from the time Islam was
conveyed until nowadays, no development occurs due to Muslim still stuck on
only learn things from Quran and Sunnah. Allah mentioned in surah Al-Hijr
verse 10
“Verily, We Ourselves have sent down
this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian”
This verse of the Holy Quran
promises that its text has been safe-guarded in its original form by a divine
plan for all times to come.
The
misconceptions that stated Islam is uncivilized are based on false understanding
about Islam. There are a lot of verses mentioned in Quran and hadith that Islam
emphasize harmonic environment. As an example, the Quran stated that if two
peoples arguing with each other there is indeed someone must be a person who
can comfort them and avoid the arguing to become last longer. Furthermore,
in one hadith from Abu Ayyub al-Anshari : Rasulullah S.A.W said :
“It is not
right for a man to abandon his brother for more than three days".
(Bukhari, Muslim).
It is clear that Islamic teaching
encourage us to find the best way and be with each other in mutual consent. Moreover, Quran also reminded us to become more conscious on
someone who can use any knowledge that they have in order to create a great
mischief among their communities that can lead to separateness. As in surah
Ali-Imran verse 78:
“There is among them a section
who distort the Book with their tongues: (as they read) you would think it is
part of the Book; and they say, “”That is from Allah,” but it is not from
Allah: it is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!
